For us, sustainability is not a trend, but a daily commitment. At Herz, we take responsibility – ecologically, socially and economically. With innovative solutions and consistent action, we are actively shaping a future worth living.

Sustainable and recyclable packaging

Environmentally friendly packaging is a central and long-term concern for us at Herz. Our goal is to develop packaging solutions that meet our high standards for product protection and quality – while minimising our impact on the environment.
The development of sustainable cheese packaging requires tailor-made concepts, because every change is technically demanding and depends on many factors such as product safety, material availability and compatibility with existing packaging machines. For years, we have been working intensively to continuously develop our packaging and make it more sustainable.

To ensure that our cheese specialities are not only delicious but also safe to eat, all packaging must comply with legal requirements – regardless of the material used. Our solutions provide optimum protection for the cheese, are as recyclable as possible, easy to dispose of and use as little material as possible.

To achieve our goal of sustainable packaging step by step, we consistently pursue three strategies:

Reduction

  • Avoiding packaging or packaging components wherever possible
  • Minimising the use of materials, e.g. by using thinner films

Substitution

  • Using sustainable, recyclable or alternative materials instead of conventional plastics

Recyclability

  • Developing packaging from single-type monomaterials
  • Promoting separability and recyclability 

Our packaging solutions are regularly reviewed and further optimised – also with a view to new legal requirements and technical developments. We take a holistic approach to sustainability and also include disposal. After all, even the best packaging is only as good as its correct disposal!

Energy efficiency & resource conservation

Our energy supply is almost self-sufficient and is largely fed from renewable sources:

Photovoltaics

  • A powerful 750 kWp PV system supplies more electricity than we need for our production and office space – including power for our electric company vehicles

Geothermal energy

  • 17 probes at a depth of 200 metres enable efficient use of geothermal energy

Heat recovery

  • State-of-the-art technology ensures that no energy goes unused

Our commitment

In everything we do, we think in terms of cycles. For us, sustainability means: products of the highest quality – manufactured in harmony with the environment and society.
In 2025, we introduced a certified energy and environmental management system in accordance with ISO 50001 and ISO 14001.
The implementation of these international standards underlines our clear commitment to responsible and resource-efficient business practices.
The effectiveness of our measures is regularly monitored by independent auditors – this ensures that our contribution to environmental and climate protection is transparent, traceable and continuously improved.
